Why OFA?

Orphaned Family Archives is compiled of collections of newspaper clippings, etc. of genealogical significance that have been discarded in one way or another. It's heartwarming to know these collections meant something to the generations before us and heartbreaking to see them in thrift stores and, worse, the trash! My grandmother saved the types of things you'll see posted here. We should not throw their treasures away. Future researchers will appreciate this endeavor though it may seem small now.

No, we will never have a complete citation as it is near impossible to determine where the majority of the information originated but each piece can still provide significant clues to the past. Though companies like GenealogyBank.com, Newspapers.com and Newspaperarhive.com have tremendous holdings, they are all lacking in information from small towns particularly in the Southern U.S. There are huge gaps, for instance, between Chattanooga Tennessee and Atlanta Georgia though the area is rich in history. Still, it is unlikely the newspaper archives of these smaller cities and towns will be available online any time soon.

If you are in possession of orphaned archives (letters, news articles, post cards, recipes, report cards, photographs, notes...anything really), or stumble upon such, I'll be happy to attempt to find an appreciative audience either by locating family researchers or adding them to this online collection.

Thank you for stopping by!
